From Passive Operators to Proactive Problem Solvers : JMAC Observation in India
JMAC's global operational scope (outside Japan) has had a long presence in India. Historically JMAC has been supporting over 50 companies, 80 factories/plants in India since 2000.
This summer JMAC dispatched an observation team and visited multiple client sites. We were able to observe operators engaging in improvement challenges and efforts on the shop floor. Even with the extreme summer heat outside the plant, what stood out even more was the intense energy of the frontline operators.
This article explains how Japanese TPM, originating from a different cultural context, is being embraced in Indian companies.

Structuring the Mindset: Why TPM Drives Cultural Change
A transformation adopted across all facilities is that operators, who previously waited for instructions, have first developed a deep understanding of equipment structures and then actively identified equipment abnormalities. Now, they attempt to tackle challenges.
Although the teams are still on the path toward the ideal state, team members are utilizing their own creativity to generate ideas, demonstrating true ownership through their continuous improvement journey.
Additionally, it was truly impressive to see them fully utilize their imagination and collective intelligence to formulate countermeasures, such as building custom cleaning tools which utilize a machine's own motion to make cleaning easier. Also, after finding a leakage during cleaning, operators who had been upskilled as part of TPM activities were able to replace and adjust components and prevent further leaks, which enhanced the machine's performance. Their TPM implementation is thus delivering results and heading to easier and lighter gemba work loads.
Structured Problem-Solving: Eliminating Root Causes
JMAC has assisted the plant teams in recognizing how the structured TPM framework allows a thorough investigation into the true root causes of breakdowns and losses, ultimately improving daily operations.
TPM introduces various systematic root-cause solutions/analysis which helps teams to expose the root cause. Mastering this structured mindset allowed the plant to eliminate legacy equipment losses that had previously been accepted as "normal operating conditions." By understanding where the losses are and uncovering the true root causes means kaizens are achieved and problems do not repeat. Without recurring problems a plant can achieve elevated overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), predictable production output, and increased profitability.
Transform Your Shop Floor into a Profit Driver
Operational excellence can not be achieved by pursuing simply focusing on metrics. It is realized when structured systems tap into your workforce. By pairing disciplined root-cause analysis with shop-floor empowerment, TPM can eliminate operational headaches and create measurable results.
